Bravo beef and beef heart formulas have been recalled.
Manchester, Conn., pet food maker Bravo today announced a limited product recall after Listeria bacteria was discovered in one sample.

The bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes, poses a greater threat to people than pets. A small number of dogs exhibited nausea and diarrhea that may be associated with the recalled food, Bravo stated, but no related human illnesses, which may include fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain or diarrhea, were reported.

Listeria infections are most common in newborns, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

When I see these notices, and read about the horrible tragedies tainted foods can cause our pets, I always look for guidance and strategies for avoiding problems associated with tainted food product, but there is rarely any offered.

But I have a strategy that I use and I'll share it here. It's simple really: maintain a rotating food supply. Buy your regular food products regularly, but put the newest purchase BEHIND the others so that you use the oldest stock first. By doing this, it's more unlikely that you'll feed a tainted lot to your pet before a recall is issued. It takes a little time to build up a rotating stock, but once you do, the risk of feeding tainted food to your pet is significantly reduced. Hope this helps!
