News has hit today that Hello Kitty is definitely, emphatically NOT a cat. We have loved this bow-sporting, overall-wearing character since her 1970s debut and are struggling with the idea that she might not be what we thought.

Hear Sanrio's response to the Hello Kitty controversy >>

University of Hawaii anthropologist Christine R. Yano found out the shocking secret while curating a Hello Kitty retrospective set to open in October at the Japanese American National Museum. Reps from Hello Kitty-creator Sanrio had read Yano's written texts for the exhibit, and corrected her use of the word "cat" to describe the cartoon character.

"I was corrected — very firmly," Yano told the LA Times. "Hello Kitty is not a cat. She's a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She's never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it's called Charmmy Kitty."

The pet cat did elicit some curiosity among fans, who wondered if a Goofy/Pluto time situation was in effect. Well, one fan, at least. (OK, me.)

Yes, she may be a cartoon character, but she looks like a cat that walks upright on 2 legs. In my opinion that makes her a cat!!!

How about that - Hello Kitty is actually a cartoon character. Gee, I would have never figured that out. Come on people - are we that far out of focus that someone needs to remind us it is a fictionalized cartoon character. The next thing they will try to fool me on -that Mickey Mouse is actually a cartoon character. What's the world coming to!

So disappointing! Why does a little girl meow and purr? and have kitty ears? I liked her as a cartoon kitty, but feel disgusted now.
