Chevy Cat Patricia Spayd Williamsburg, Va. I love to sit on my servant’s bookcase – as long as I persistently meow, she will give in and lift me up to places on high. I was a 3-week-old abandoned feral when Daddy Jack found me at a truck stop. He brought me home and I was ensconced indoors rather than outside with the barn cats. Daddy Jack died when I was 3. I enjoyed sitting on his head like a big Russian hat!

Beefcake and Twiggy Terri Karman Huntington Beach, Calif. My two black cats were rescued from a shelter nine years ago as kittens. I know that black cats have a more difficult time getting adopted, so that makes me love them even more. Beefcake is very bossy and active. He loves to cuddle and play with wand toys. He can leap pretty high in the air for his "prey.” On the other hand, Twiggy is a little more shy. She loves to sit on your lap and carry her toy mice around as she howls in victory. They love each other so much and show it by grooming each other, playing together, spooning and arguing over who gets the favorite cat bed.

Boo Sherri Putzer New Richmond, Wis. I’m owned by a gorgeous medium-haired black Bombay mix. His name is Boo, and he is 15 months old. We rescued him six months ago from a local shelter. He has amazing green eyes and has a personality that goes along with his stunning gaze. His most endearing (and exasperating) trait is that the kitchen is his favorite part of the house. He closely observes every aspect of food preparation and is always foraging for scraps. Jumping in the refrigerator is not unusual. Thankfully, he hasn’t learned how to open it yet. His favorite human foods are popcorn and peanut butter, though he only gets a taste if he’s extra sneaky. His favorite pastime is chasing and fetching plastic balls – just like a dog!

Chloe Kristin Watson Fruitland, Md. Chloe is like a best friend to me and we spend a lot of time together. She loves sleeping in my room and at the foot of my bed. When I change the sheets, she loves to paw out the wrinkles. She has proclaimed herself the alpha of my three cats, but she loves her sisters very much. Chloe is a great and amazing companion. Her love and incredible personality have helped me stay happy and overcome many challenges.

Cleo Kelani Woodruff Centennial, Colo. Cleopatra weighed 1 pound when I adopted her from a shelter. Eventually, she grew from scrawny and sickly to sleek, sassy and strong enough to rule over Aimee, my rat terrier. They love to chase, wrestle, groom, spoon and nap. Her "throne” on the landing lets her survey her entire realm.

Cleo Diane Liga My sweet Cleo loves to snuggle. She’s the silkiest beauty I’ve ever seen. There’s not an ounce of any other color on her fur and she has piercing yellow eyes. She’s 7 years old and still very much a playful kitten. I couldn’t love her more.

Dazz Wynter M. Dazz is an 18-month-old black male. I found him online under the category of special needs. We drove three hours to adopt him. Radial hypoplasia (twisty legs) does not stop him from running up and down the stairs and jumping incredibly high. He is the most adorable and loving cat.

Dutch Emmy Pennington Reno, Nev. Dutch is a 10-year-old male longhair cat that I adopted when I was 10 years old. Dutch is truly a unique cat. I have never met another cat who follows you around the house and wails his fuzzy little head off until you follow him to his food dish. He greets us when we get home, purrs in my ear when I’m trying to sleep and is always eager to lick someone’s face when they need it the most. Because he was adopted from a shelter, we don’t know what kind of life he had before, and he is somewhat shy at times. But once he gets to know someone he becomes a friend for life. They say black cats tend to be friendlier, and I believe it 100%.

Ebby (short for Ebony) Brandy Chlebecek Ebby is 3 ½ years old and the queen of her castle. She is long, lanky and dainty. She has fur like satin and is pure black. Her nickname is Panther because of her sleek movements. Her days are spent chasing lasers and furry mice, and lounging/napping on her cat tower.

T.S. (TypeSet) Marcia Elliott Liberty, Ill. Sitting in the sun in our bay window is T.S.’s favorite pastime, but at one time he was our "office manager” at our printing and newspaper business. T.S. (dubbed TypeSet Elliot by office staff) was rescued off the street as a very small kitten on the hottest day of summer in 2007. An employee heard his pitiful cry as he was trying to find a bit of shade from a flower pot located just off the busy highway. He was dirty with a runny nose and matted eyes. Our veterinarian treated him but warned us that he might not make it. With medication and nurturing, T.S. began to look healthier. Now, he is a beautiful cat loved by everyone.

Gizmo Patty Landwehr Cold Spring, Ky. Gizmo is a 1-year-old Bombay mix who loves to chase his sister Giselle around the house.

Kitty Fluffy-Pants Brittany Doffyn Chicago I rescued Kitty when she was only a few weeks old with no mother. Barely 2 pounds and fighting distemper, she was not expected to live. By pure luck, I found that she had a love for Gerber’s applesauce. She started gaining weight so I could wean her to cat food. We won the fight and made it through those tough times. Ten years later, we just celebrated her birthday with a terrible hand-made party hat to go along with her applesauce "cake.”

Ladybug Montine Manfredi Port St. Lucie, Fla. This is Ladybug, 3 ½ years old. I adopted her from our local no-kill shelter, Dogs & Cats Forever, in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The staff found her along with her three nursing kittens on their doorstep and named the whole family after bugs. Ladybug has been my girl from Day One – it was love at first sight!

Lucy Ruth Melnick Brooklyn, N.Y. Lucy is the gentleman of my feral colony. He appeared last winter with his sister Minnie. After a few months of socializing, we realized that Lucy was a boy, but the name had already stuck. Lucy never swats at a sibling, lets the youngsters eat first and would never bite the hand that feeds him. He was trapped and neutered in April and is back living happily in the 89th Street colony.

Maxwell Janel and Cary Saar Winfield, Ill. We adopted Maxwell from a shelter on Thanksgiving Day 11 years ago. How serendipitous, since we’ve been thankful for his sweet and gentle nature every day thereafter! Bringing us only good luck, "Maxie” always knows when we need comfort or a laugh, and he happily obliges his adoring humans.

Minx and Mischief Kelly Paal Trafford, Pa. We found our girls in January 2013. They were two of three left in a litter of four that were rescued from an abandoned house full of cats. We took them (and their tortoiseshell sister, Misty) and found out afterward that the kitties had been available for weeks, but no one had shown any interest in two black girls. The cat rescue group thanked us for taking both of them as they normally take months to place black cats. While others think they are bad luck, they have brought us nothing but love, smiles and tons of good luck.

Munjee Juliet Park Garden Grove, Calif. Scruffy baby Munjee was only a few weeks old, famished, flea-ridden and extremely wild when she came to live with us in 2006 after we found her in our church shed. We bathed her, fed her and nurtured her back to health. We named her Munjee because that means "dust” in Korean. She is now a healthy adult cat with a sweet, playful, talkative and endearing personality. It has been seven years since we rescued Munjee, and she has become a precious member of our family.

SkippyBibbyPooh Alana Sullivan Las Vegas July in the desert – 10 a.m. in Las Vegas and 101 degrees. Out of hot, thin air, the tiniest black kitten appears, not so much meowing as mewling pitifully. No, no – I can’t do it. I already have too many. No shelter would accept this kitten – 5 to 6 weeks old, pure black, sleek and shiny, a most elegant kitten. Into his new digs, his purr filled the room. We call our SkippyBippyPooh "The Cat Who Fell From Heaven.”

Zoe Denise and Ken Faria Fall River, Mass. Zoe chose us to be her family about two months ago. I have a birdfeeder in the backyard, usually full of hungry little birds. Not that day. I went to see why there were no birds, and there in the bushes was this cute little kitty that stole my heart immediately. One look at that face and I was hers! She came to greet me and licked my hand. I knew she had to part of our family. We already had two black cats – what’s one more?

CoCo Puff Jan and Ross Wattay Mt. Pleasant, S.C. My name is CoCo Puff, and I am a year and 3-month-old black Persian. I was born at Victorian Gardens Cattery in North Carolina. I live in Charleston, S.C., with my family and a black Lab named Cleo. I love to cuddle and give kisses. My favorite toys are noisy, crinkly bags and small balls to bat around. I love to play hide-and-seek with Mommy and Daddy. I am very spoiled and love all the attention I get. After all, I deserve it…

Kuna Bear Vickie Flood San Diego, Calif. Kuna Bear is 7 years old and was found in a flower bed at our second home in Las Vegas when he was 3 or 4 weeks old. He has long, silky black fur and big gold-green eyes. His favorite things are treats, chasing his sister, catching his bird toy and sleeping on his back so his tummy can catch the sun and breeze.

Salem Diane and Stephen Czerviski North Wales, Pa. Salem is our 3 ½-year-old solid black male cat. A great family cat, his coat is soft as velvet. Cold and wet, he appeared as a stray on our deck in October of 2010. We took him in to protect him over the Halloween holiday. We names him Salem for the spirit of black cats and Halloween.

Shadow Diane Meek Kansas City, Kan. It was love at first sight. Shadow was adopted on 1/11/09 from a shelter in Lansing, Kan. Shadow loves us as much as we love him. Every morning, I awake to purring on my pillow. Every evening, my husband, John, gets head bumps while they cuddle on the couch. Shadow is now 6 years old and shares us with 13-year-old Smokie (a female Siamese mix) and 1-year-old Rocky (a male black shorthair).

Sophie Christine and Paul Biondi Minnetonka, Minn. Sophie is a 3-year-old, all-black domestic shorthair. She loves to play chase with our 5-year-old Tortie (Mieko) or snuggle with our 4-year-old male Tuxedo (Chili). She is very vocal about her food – her meow, when she is demanding, sounds like she’s saying "Right now!”
Black Cat Pictures

Zoey Kate Zeiger Signal Hill, Calif. Meet Zoey, my fluffy 3-year-old beauty adopted from the SPCA. Zoey struts around talking up a storm – letting you know she has something vital to tell you, particularly when she sits in front of her toys for playtime. Her second favorite thing is bestowing legendary nose kisses. Naturally, her fur remains on your face after the kissing stops – a gentle reminder that she adores you.

Amelia Cassandra Coyle Bensalem, Pa. Amelia was adopted during the fall of 2012 and quickly became known as our little "Halloween cat.” I have honestly never seen a cat before with golden eyes, hints of green around the pupil and silky, jet black fur before. Amelia is a loving big sister to Molly, our other cat, and is very friendly with people. She also loves bread and will do anything to get into a bag of rolls. Of everyone in my house, she has bonded with me the most. I guess you could say that she’s my little black shadow.

Kia Deborah J. Raimer Inverness, Fla. Kia is about 7 years old, the oldest of our six cats. He came to us in the engine of a Kia automobile that was transported on a car carrier from Georgia to the car dealership in Florida where my sister-in-law worked. She heard him crying and brought him home to my husband. Kia is all black with green eyes and is a super gentle and loving cat. He loves to sit on my lap and press his forehead against mine while I pet him. At night, when I go to bed, he lies on my chest and nuzzles my nose while we snuggle.
