Withanys Rescue

Cat Withany

In June 2003 I started work for the Delaware Humane Association. As I began working at the shelter, I fell in love with a cat by the name of Withany. Withany was a 6-year-old Abyssinian mix who was surrendered to the shelter with two other cats. Withany did not take placement in the shelter well. She became extremely cage aggressive and aggressive toward other cats when placed in the free roaming room. As her behavior worsened, she was moved into the shelter managers office by herself.

I really felt bad for Withany. I wanted to help her. So, I asked if I could work with her, at least for two weeks. Every day I would come to work and make it a priority to visit her throughout the day. Withany and I started to form a wonderful bond. She became very affectionate toward me but wanted nothing to do with anyone else.

My boss finally suggested that I take her home to foster her. Taking her home was awful. She attacked my cats and my dogs.

At work I continued to promote her for adoption. I had a great story about her on petfinders and throughout the shelter, but I had no luck finding her a home.

After two months I had to bring her back. My animals needed a break. Withany was placed back into the shelter managers office. Soon after her return to the shelter, there was an overwhelming rescue situation that needed the extra office space. Once again, I was convinced to take Withany home.

This time, I introduced Withany to one room in my house and I kept her in that room for a week. After the week was up, I allowed her to come out at night only. Finally, one night I was downstairs watching TV and I witnessed Withany walking down the stairs. Right then and there I knew that this cat was mine. I could not take her back to the shelter. She loved me and I loved her.

Withany is now 8 years old and she is one of the best additions to my family. She greets people at the door and she has become best friends with one of my younger cats, Skitty. It took a total of four months but it was well worth it.

How wonderful that this kitty got a furever home with you. I have a friend that took in a Maine Coon cat and is having a very difficult time with him and her other four kitties. I will have to give her this article and tell her don't give up.
