Cargo

It was the usual one hour drive home from work on the Chicago tollway, until suddenly, traffic backed up five miles into my forty mile commute. A tiny kitten was dodging traffic and was heading straight for my right front wheel! Like everyone else, I too stopped. The person behind me got out of his car to rescue the kitten from under mine, but it was nowhere to be found. After several minutes of searching, I cautiously continued my ride home, taking turns easier than usual. The whole way home I wondered if I had a passenger.
Upon arriving home, my husband searched the car but did not find a kitten. Several hours after dinner, my husband went outside and found the missing kitty sitting by the rear wheel of my car; its little eyes shining up at him. Quickly, she disappeared again under the car when he approached.
It took three adults 20 minutes to extricate her from the rear wheel well of my car but she was finally safe, though scared and very scruffy.
The following morning, I took her to a veterinarian friend who ran some tests and said she would probably do just fine despite that she was only about 4 weeks old, flea infested and had an upper respiratory issue.
Today, Cargo is a healthy, thriving addition to our family. She greets us at the door when we come home, plays her favorite game of fetch with us or just cuddles with us. We are the lucky ones.
