Check out some of our Coolest Cat Home runners-up.
This is our Natural Cat Exercise Room. Nine cats in one house require their own room, so we built a room that caters to our cats need for a natural and safe environment.
The Exercise Room was constructed of heavy gauge, half-inch wire mesh, natural wood support beams and shelves onto an existing porch. Their room measures 8 feet by 10 feet and 8 feet high. We used durable wire mesh instead of ordinary screen mesh to support the cats weight while climbing without tearing. We kept all the wood unpainted so it serves nicely as perches and clawing areas.
We also built a sliding cat door into the window frame between the main house and this room so the cats can have easy access from both. However, they have complete facilities in their Exercise Room, such as food, water and litterboxes.
We live where there are many coyotes so it is not safe for the cats to roam on their own. With this Exercise Room, they have it all in the safety of an enclosed space. They've also gained something our house didn't provide: direct sunlight. In their room, they get sun all morning and cool shade in the afternoon.
The cats immensely enjoy their space. They love to climb all around the structure and jump from shelf to shelf. When they get tired, they lie wherever they want and sun themselves. Its almost like having a health club with a tanning bed too! All of these cats were rescues and some of them were very ill when we found them. After some loving care and a natural habitat for them to exercise and flourish, they are all happy and healthy.
