Cat Behavior

Is My Cat’s Behavior Weird?

Our online veterinary expert explains the mystery behind curious cat behavior.

Q: My 18-month-old cat, JennyAnyDots, has an odd tendency to drop round objects, such as rubber bands, hair bands and almost anything circular, into our dogs' drinking water. She is extremely well-behaved other than this unusual habit. Is this normal behavior among cats?

A: In the wild, cats sometimes will take their prey back to their den or nest to hide it from predators. Cats that live indoors don’t really have a “nest.” Because the food area tends to be consistent, cats often consider their food and water dishes as their safe spot within their territory. This explains why sometimes the dishes become the preferred spot for storing their favorite things, such as toys. In other words, you’re cat’s behavior is perfectly normal.

I too have a cat that likes to splash in her water bowl. I don't think it's weird, I just think some cats like water. Lil'Fay would not only splash, she would turn the bowl over. I started putting her water just inside the shower door. Now she can splash all she wants.

I have four cats (about 8 yrs). They look to me for everything, and that's OK, except when it comes to recreational activity. Very seldom do they play together. Is there anything I can do to encourage them to play more with each other instead of always coming to me? I love them but sometimes just don't have the energy.

Please never let your cat play with rubber bands, hair bands or any items such as paper clips, hairpins, etc. These things are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS and can cause a series of medical emergencies or even worse, death.
