Q: I am considering adopting a pure bred 3-year-old Persian, but know nothing about this breed. I just lost a mixed breed cat and am devastated. What are Persians’ life spans and do they interact well with other cats? What conditions and extra care do they need?

A: I’m glad to hear that you’re considering adopting an adult cat. Kittens are easily adopted, but adult cats can have difficulty finding homes.

In my experience, Persians tend to be low-key, affectionate cats who get along well with others. (I do have a few very feisty ones in my practice, but they’re the exception.) Their life spans are similar to other cats. Being longhaired, Persians require regular grooming to avoid getting matted. Most Persians enjoy the grooming, and taking 15 or 30 minutes every day to brush your cat is a great way to bond with him.

Persians have flat faces and tend to accumulate a little more eye discharge than other breeds, but you can easily wipe this away with a tissue as part of your cat’s daily grooming. I recommend taking your new Persian to the veterinarian soon after you adopt him, to make sure you’re starting out on the right foot (paw) with him.

I don't know why anyone would purchase a cat that has been bred to have such a poor configuration of eyes and nose. It is the equivalent of a pug. It just doesn't make sense for their breathing. They are also bred for large heads and small pelvis's, which makes labor very difficult for the mothers. Mixed breeds don't have the genetic problems that come from inbred ("purebred") cats.
