Q: What should I do to keep my cat healthy?

A: Thanks to the advances in veterinary medicine, cats are living longer lives. One of my house calls was caring for two wonderful domestic shorthair cats, Wheaty and Pete, who lived to be 21 and 22 years old. Due to their long life, they both developed numerous medical problems. Thanks to loving owners, they had semi-annual trips to the vet, where their problems were caught early enough to be treated. This allowed them to live longer and enjoy a good quality of life.

The most important advice I can give you is don’t wait till your cat is sick to take your cat to the vet. Arrange regular checkups; for older kitties, I suggest every six months. Just like humans, early detection of problems aids treatment. Also, obesity in cats can cause all kinds of problems including heart disease, diabetes and arthritis. Ask your vet for a good nutritious diet to maintain the right weight for your cat.

Please try to keep you cat indoors. It keeps them safe from many illnesses and away from parasites and predators. Safely lock away household toxins as well. In fact, look for my column next week on keeping your cat safe from household hazards.

Cats are loving and loyal companions, and you must make sure they are healthy and happy. I have not read any reports that say human companionship increases a pet cat’s lifespan but evidence suggests that sharing our home with a cat might increases ours. I certainly think so. Make plenty of time to cuddle and play with your cat — a sure way to make her happy. In my home if my cats are happy, I am happy. As always I welcome your stories and comments.
