Kitten Experience

Social Sweeties: Early, Positive Experiences

Kittens benefit from positive socialization experiences in the early weeks of their lives.

When you offer a different food to your kitten, give it a second bowl next to the kittens usual food, Buffington says. When you change litter, offer it a second litter in a different box. Cats respond much better to novelty when they have a choice and when you think about it, most people would realize that we prefer having a choice too!

Giving your kitten important social and environmental experiences early in life will give it the best possible mental and emotional start.

You wouldn't want to build a house on a shaky foundation, Johnson-Bennett says. If you want an ideal cat, why not start with a firm foundation?

I got my two adorable furrballs (Marshmallow and Tabitha ) from a rescue organization at 3 1/2 months -- as far as they were concerned "mom". The poor things were scared, underweight, skittish, and needed lots of TLC after their early kittenhood (starved, abused, neglected, and then abandoned before I got them). Worked hard to make them feel very secure in "their" house and carefully socialized them with new human friends. Now at almost 2 they are doing much better: No more nightmares, much more secure and independent, and acting very much like normal cats.

I rescued a little kitty about five weeks ago. He is now about three months old. This article gave me a few ideas regarding changes to his routine. It also let me know what things I did right or wrong over the past month.
