Like Persians, those longhaired coats come with a price. Combing for a few minutes everyday, as well as an occasional bath, will reduce matting, shedding and hairballs. |

1957. Today all major associations accept the Himalayan as either a division of the Persian breed or as its own breed. |
| Personality: |
Despite their distant Siamese genes, Himalayans share the easygoing personality of Persians. They are quiet and gentle yet playful, affectionate and willing participants in family activities. |

Named after similarly marked Himalayan rabbits, Himalayan cats have the best of both worlds: the striking pointed markings of the Siamese and the long, luxurious coat, cobby body, trademark short nose, large round eyes and small ears of the Persian. With blue eyes gorgeous enough to make any copper-eyed Persian jealous, they are truly a sight to behold. |

Depending on the association, the Himalayan may be considered a separate breed or a color pattern of the Persian breed. The Himalayan was originally developed from crosses between Siamese and Persians in an effort to transfer the pointed pattern to the Persian type. The cat should have the massive build and flowing coat of the Persian no matter how it is registered. A wide range of point colors are accepted, including seal, chocolate, blue, lilac, red, cream and the combinations of parti-color points and tabby (called lynx) points.
