Kitten History: Korat

This silver charmer has been a symbol of good fortune and prosperity for centuries.

Stacy Hackett

Korat © Helmi FlickShe's your new lucky charm, your Korat kitten: gazing at you with green eyes that herald good crops; and covered in fur the color of silver, signifying wealth. For centuries this native cat of Thailand has been a symbol of good fortune.

The Korat, or Si-Sawat, has been revered and cherished by the Thai people throughout the ages. A Korat is depicted in The Cat-Book Poems, an ancient work, and in paintings. Other folk tales state that the Korat was named by King Rama V.

A cat this beautiful couldn't stay hidden from the cat fancy for long. The first pair of Korats entered the United States in 1959, and the breed was accepted for championship status in the Cat Fanciers Association in 1966. Though a relatively rare breed, the Korat enjoys a strong and dedicated following.

My boyfriend adopted a cat from our local humane society back in October. This was to be "his cat" so he went to pick one out by himself. He picked out Jake, a beautiful, all grey 4 month old male. When my boyfriend came home with Jake, I immediately fell in love with him. He's so loving and sweet, and he loves to play with any toy you give him. We call him our little dog because he likes to play fetch. We like to take him to Petsmart and PetCo and he rides in the cart, staying completely calm and well behaved. One time while at the pet store, I was asked by another customer what breed of cat he was and I didn't know, so I started doing some research and found out that he's a Korat. I'd never even heard of that breed before, so thank you so much for all of the useful information about Korats. Jake really encompasses all of the Korat traits, and I'm so very proud to call him ours.

We have two brothers that appear to be Korats but are much larger. One is 16#. The other 17# but not fat. They are as described as far as attitude is concerned. Don't like too much activity or noise, do not make up easily. We got them from the local Humane Society.

I loved the article on Korats, but I wonder if my kitten is a korat, she has all of the physical characteristics and the manner, but she is very vocal. Are they generally so vocal
