Kitten History: Russian Blue

Luminous green eyes and a silver-tipped coat confer a singular beauty upon this kitten.

Russian Blue © Helmi FlickThe Russian Blue is captivating, without question. His short, dense coat is soft to the touch, and his lithe body shows regal bearing. Some cat lovers believe this royal demeanor reflects the Russian Blues heritage.

While some believe the Russian Blue is descended from the royal cats kept by Russian Czars, the true origin of this breed remains a mystery. Many believe the breed originates from the Archangel Isles in northern Russia. Legend tells us that the cats were brought from the Isles to Northern Europe and England in the 1860s.

From wherever they originally hailed, Russian Blues made their exhibition debut at the Crystal Palace in 1875, shown together with other blue-coated breeds. In 1912, the Russian Blue received its own class; some of the cats subsequently made their way to the United States. The breed began gaining popularity in the 1960s, and is today a favorite in both the show ring and the pet home.

In the last month or so we've adopted the most precious little kitten, Jade. We brought her home because of her loving personality - even at the shelter she couldn't stop herself from kneading and nuzzling. We were told that she was a domestic short hair who had been found with a few of her siblings, abandoned somewhere around town. The more we get to know her, the sadder that idea becomes as I cannot honestly imagine a more loving and doting kitten. After battling a nasty URI that she'd contracted in the shelter, our vet told us that she was actually a Russian Blue and that her personality is a common trait of the breed. She's still a kitten, mind you, and once she was healthy again, she was back up to playing and pouncing and wrestling with her older brother, Jasper (a 10 mo old male orange tabby). But this skinny little kitten from the pound with the wild eyes and too-big ears has the most loving personality I have ever seen. As I sit here typing this, she's tenderly biting my left hand, trying to get it to stop moving so she can resume grooming me. I am so thankful for her, and to this day I just can't understand how anyone could have let her slip away. If you're reading this article looking for a cat or family pet - you should probably go with another breed like the tabby or short hair. However, if you're looking for another member of the family or a companion, seek out the Russian Blue. You won't be disappointed.

Our Russian Blue "Pooh Bear" was born on Easter 1997 and loved to sit beneath the Christmas tree each year. She died two weeks ago on July 29, 2009. She was responding to chemo for lymphoma but a UTI was more than her kidneys could take and they were beginning to fail. If they fixed the kidneys she could not continue chemo and she could not do chemo with the kidney problem. Catch 22. She was very intelligent and was active and playful, even while sick. We never thought of her as old. She slept on me at night and watched TV in my wife's arms. She laid in my lap when I was at the computer. She was like a child to us. She could almost talk to us, we knew what she wanted. She is greatly missed. We would like to find another female Russian Blue kitten to raise. It was a shock when we lost her. Her mother lives with my brother and is over 19 years old. Pooh's grandmother belonged to my parents and lived for over 20 years. They are very hardy and long lived cats. They are loyal to their owners and a joy to live with.

My Russian Blue was my daughters college cat which she brought home "For the summer". At the end of the summer I would not let my daughter take Harry (the female cat)back to college because I fell in love with her. She is now 2 years old and still very mischievious. My 15 year old Maine Coon female just wants to be a lazy girl, but Harry insists on constantly bothering her. Quite a bit of entertainment most days!

I purchased a Blue from a lady in North Carolina. He has been playful, talkative and just fun to be around. His name is Boris. When I was driving home with him from North Carolina, I was listening to the Swan Lake opera. The only time he got upset was when the music stopped.
