Kitten History: Scottish Fold

For ears a jolly-good feline.

Scottish Fold © Helmi FlickVisitors to your home may comment on your Scottish Fold kittens adorable ears: He looks like an owl! Those ears make him look like a bear! Where did he get those ears?

Your kitten can thank a barn cat named Susie for his distinctive, folded ears. In 1961, William Ross spotted Susie at a farm in the Tayside region of Scotland, and asked her owners if he could keep her. Susies folded ears captivated Ross, and he began breeding her to perpetuate the charming mutation.

It wasn't long before cat enthusiasts in the United States fell in love with the Scottish Fold. The unique breed received Cat Fanciers Association championship status in 1978, and the breed quickly became a favorite of breeders and pet owners.

Though popular, the Scottish Fold is one of the rarer cat breeds. Because the gene that produces the folded ears is incompletely dominant, not all kittens develop them. Owning one of these precious cats puts you among an elite group of dedicated fanciers.

I have had the pleasure of owning my Scottish Fold, Duncan, since 2000. He's given me 9 years of companionship, I love it when he sits like a real person and watches TV with me! He will occasionally do "sit-ups".He's orange with perfect markings. Love him to pieces!

I raised scottish folds for some years, maximilliion, and tiffany, straight ear and of course folded ear, the folded ear daddy died after 10 years and the straight ear female is alive after 16 human years, some of her off spring we still have, and they are sweet, bashful and very timid, until recently one of her off spring, is very jealous of her and our attention of her. she is old and so are her off spring, she has lost her teeth, however, one of the bad things is their claws continue to grow and grow back into their paws if not noticed. Have to keep them groome, we have combination of short hair and long hair which leaves lots of grooming, question, how long do these breeds live?
