Cat Food

Standard vs. Premium Cat Foods

Some manufacturers label their pet foods as "premium." What earns this food distinction?

CatIf we compare the guaranteed analysis statement on the labels of standard and premium cat food products, a few differences are noticeable. Slightly higher concentrations of protein and the presence of animal-source ingredients at the top of the ingredients list suggest that premium cat foods might be more palatable and have a higher protein digestibility than standard products. Also, quality can vary and manufacturers can specify that the ingredients they use meet specific analytical criteria. This can also affect digestibility. Higher concentrations of fat in premium foods will also increase palatability as well as overall dry-matter digestibility.

Higher digestibility and increased caloric density of premium cat foods mean the nutritional needs of cats are met by feeding smaller amounts of premium food compared with standard food. This may offset the greater expense of premium products. But the increased palatability and caloric density mean that owners must monitor food intake, because cats are more likely to overeat when fed premium products.

It's difficult to say definitively whether premium foods will make a major difference in the health, happiness and longevity of your cat. Owners must choose a food based on what they believe is best for their cat.

This is helpful. I have a three-month-old kitten and want to start her out right. Cost of food (well, for the most part!) is not even my key concern. I would like to feed her the best food, but it's important that she LIKE it. Over the years my cats have eaten more Fancy Feast (wet and dry) than anything else, though I've consistently bought a variety), and have lived long lives. One is 20 now.

About the kitten -- I would be tempted to just give her what she wants and likes, which seems to be ProPlan or Sophisticat wet and Purina Kitten Chow dry. The only real concern is that she is scratching a lot and does not have fleas (she's been seen by and treated by a vet). So I was thinking her foods, with a high grain content, might be causing the itching. Plus, I want something that's good for her digestion. The Wellness brand was highly recommended, but she doesn't seem to care for it -- wet or dry. She's really too young to have developed any finicky habits, truly. She came to me after being cared for in a home with her siblings, and has only been here a week. Any thoughts -- about a good healthy kitten food that kittens might actually like, or the itching skin (maybe it doesn't have to do with the food at all, and I will certainly address with with the vet when we follow up in a week or two.
