In early December 2003, the Ontario, Canada, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Newmarket was busy. A building superintendent arrived with a striped, gray tabby that was at death’s door. He explained that some tenants had moved and left the cat behind, without food or water. The examining veterinarian wasn’t optimistic about the cat’s chances for survival but ordered an IV and planned to reassess the case in the morning.
The next day, the gray tabby had improved sufficiently, and the veterinarian gave him more time to recover. Meanwhile, the staff named him Tony the Tiger because of his stripes.
