Hit the Road - With Your Cat

Tips for a feline-friendly adventure.

When people think about going on a road trip with their pets, dogs usually come to mind. Yet traveling with your cat can be a fun experience, provided both of you are well prepared.

Before packing your cat up and hitting the road, you'll need to think about whether your cat has the temperament to handle such an adventure. "Cats that do best when traveling are curious, but not too mischievous," says Jill Goldman, PhD, a certified applied animal behaviorist practicing in Laguna Beach, Calif. "They are also sociable, easy-going, adaptable, relaxed, trusting and confident."

Cats typically don't handle changes in their environment as well as dogs do - especially if they were not exposed to different environments as kittens - so, it takes a special cat to have all these qualities.

In the late 80's I traveled everywhere with my young kitten, Henri(etta). We moved from water and mountain sports to Arizona and more horseback riding and learning to float on a raft (usually with one of my Mom's dogs) in the swimming pool. We had fifteen years of wonderful companionship. It was humbling to be trusted completely in every situation. As long as I didn't freak out she was just dandy. Right down to going with me on dinner dates in my shoulder purse! Trust in any relationship is vital for longevity. Be worthy!!!
