Cats are territorial by nature, and in the wild they have ample space to roam and manage resources and personality conflicts.

Domesticated cats in a multi-cat household, however, may feel competitive for resources or may live with other cats that they do not get along with very well. Common problems owners of multiple cats encounter include “spraying and depositing feces outside the box as a way to mark territory, fighting or anxiety and stress,” says Ilona Rodan, a veterinarian with a specialty in feline practice and co-chair of the Feline Behavior Guidelines committee of the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP).

Fortunately, you can structure a multi-cat home in a way that fosters peace and harmony.
