The Animal Shelter, A.C. (A.C. designates a registered charity in Mexico), sits on the shores of Lake Chapala, near Guadalajara, Mexico. The climate and natural beauty of the region make it a popular tourist and retirement destination, but the native residents are challenged by poverty and lack of education. Little by little, that is changing for pets and the people who care for them, thanks in part to the work of a dedicated veterinary family.

Seventy years ago, Mexico boasted one veterinary school at San Jacinto, where Antonio Ladron de Guevara Cassal graduated with honors in 1942. In those days, he and the only other veterinarian in Guadalajara worked from their homes.
