Hepatic Lipidosis in Cats

Fatal Fat

Experts weigh-in about the dangers of hepatic lipidosis.

By Joyce Laird

When humans brought cats inside as companions, we took on the responsibility of helping them adjust to healthy indoor lifestyles, including weight control. Feline obesity fosters many dangerous health conditions, but none is more deadly than hepatic lipidosis, or “fatty liver disease.”

“Hepatic lipidosis can strike whenever a cat stops eating,” says Edward Moser, veterinarian and a pet nutritional consultant in Chelmsford, Mass. “Sadly, when a chubby cat stops eating, we don’t worry because we think [it] can afford to lose a few pounds. That’s not the case.”

In the time a cat stops eating, it can become ill rapidly, veterinarians say. “People need to be aware that in overweight cats this disease becomes fatal fairly fast,” says Dan Christian, a veterinarian and executive director of the Purina Pet Institute in St. Louis. “Even 24 hours without food can send a fat cat’s liver into this fatal syndrome.”

In the January 2007 article titled "Fatal Fat". My Siamese cat had this fatty liver disease about 4 years ago. I ended up taking Cuddles to 4 different Veterinarians and finally on the 4th one, the veterinarian was able to diagnosed Cuddles with Fatty liver disease. Cuddles had drastically lost weight and wouldn’t want to get up to do anything include eating. His blue eyes turned yellow green because of the Jaundice. Now as for the treatments their are other options other than using painful surgical procedures. We ended up running a tube through Cuddles's nose and I had to feed him a canned liquid diet that looked like milk. The 8 oz cans ran about $7.00 each. I fed him every hour on the hour and through the night it was every two hours, just like you had a newborn baby. After about a week, Cuddles feeding time became every 30 minutes. Then at the end of the second week his feeding time became every 15 minutes. At the end of the third he wanted to eat on his own when I opened up one of his favorite canned cat food. He then ate maybe two or three bites at a time and we continued to feed him through his tube for the next two days as long as he was eating on his own, Cuddles Veterinarian decided to remove his tube. Now when we were feeding Cuddles through his tube he could be sound asleep and didn’t even know he was being fed. So it wasn't painful for Cuddles or stressful for us. All in all if you really care about your cat, you can treat this disease with excellent results, with little or no stress and maybe out by about $ 800.00 the story that you had printed is inaccurate and out of date. This procedure was done on Cuddles in January of 2003 and it is now the most common procedure for this disease. Cuddles Veterinarian is a graduate of Texas A&M.
