When Hurricane Katrina blasted New Orleans, thousands of pets were stranded. Cheri Kaltenbach and her 6-year-old daughter Bryce, however, were able to take their 6-month-old orange tabby Buddy with them when they headed with a friend for higher ground in Vicksburg, Miss., just a few days before Katrina hit. The friends soon separated, he by truck to a brother in Orlando, Fla., the Kaltenbachs by bus to cousins in Phoenix, Ariz. The bus line wouldn’t allow cats on-board, so Cheri asked her friend to take Buddy with him to Orlando. He obliged. Cheri and Bryce made the long road trip to Phoenix.
