Ah, fat cats! Unfortunately, they’re an all-too-common sight. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual (9th edition), 20 percent of cats seen by veterinarians are overweight and 5 percent are obese. Too many calories, too little activity and boredom can lead to this problem, and that’s just the beginning. The health concerns associated with feline obesity include diabetes, arthritis, heart conditions and inability to groom properly, which can lead to matting and some non-allergenic skin conditions. We need to watch all our kitties, but neutered males ages 6 to 11 (that would include both my boys!) especially are prone. If you’re considering changing kitty’s diet so it can lose weight, always consult your veterinarian for the best way to proceed. Improper dieting methods can lead to another set of health issues. In the meantime, here are some additional options for keeping cats fit.
