Meet the unique Pallas cat.

Many of those who study wild cats find the Pallas cat the most amazing-looking of all of the 22 small wild cat species. The Pallas cat currently lives in countries including Mongolia, Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

Also known as the Manul, the Pallas cat weighs between 41⁄2 and 9 pounds — the same as most house cats. However, the Pallas cat’s fur, the longest of any cat, makes it appear larger. Living in the cold, rocky areas and semi-deserts of Central Asia, the Pallas cat needs this silvery, grayish fur to keep warm and camouflage itself from predators. When hiding, it lies silently, flat on the open ground, blending into the land.
