With its spots, marbles and rosettes, the Bengal's distinctive coat patterns can make cat lovers stop in their tracks to take another look. Combine the breed's good looks with its loyal personality, and it's no wonder the Bengal claims the honor as most popular breed in The International Cat Association year after year. "Their beauty combined with their loving traits as companions have continued to increase their popularity as pets," says Pat Harbert, a breeder from Oklahoma. "Their personality is akin to that of a best friend, which is why some compare their behavior to a dog's."

The Bengal earns its comparison to a dog because of its active, outgoing nature. Words used to describe the cat include athletic, affectionate, intelligent and high-energy. "They would like to be included in everything you do; they like to be in the middle of the action," says Jennifer Weiss, a breeder from Maryland. "If they are not exercised enough, they will find their own trouble to get into."
