In it for the Long Haul

Lessons learned from running marathons helps Laura Klink go the distance with her foster cats.

"Just take it one step at a time. Have patience, stay calm and press ahead," Laura Klink silently repeated to herself while running a grueling 50-mile ultra marathon last summer. With burning legs slowly carrying her forward, the 42 year-old thought about how the same tenets hold true for her other passion: fostering cats and kittens. Her two favorite pastimes seem worlds apart, yet she applies the same philosophies to both. Little did she know that later that summer, her passions would collide and test her guiding principles even more profoundly than the challenges she faced during the ultra marathon.

"The two things that keep me sane are marathon running and fostering," says Klink, who works full time as marketing manager for a large media advertising sales organization in Portland, Ore. "It's kind of surprising how similar they are, really."
