How organic, natural and raw diets can benefit your cat.

Holistic veterinarians assert that a proper diet for cats -- comprised largely or entirely of natural, organic or raw foods -- strengthens the immune system, improves overall health and might even prevent certain illnesses.

Cats require high levels of proteins and essential fatty acids, plus specific amino acids, vitamins and minerals. If cats are fed insufficient or indigestible nutrients or diets containing synthetic preservatives, dyes and other contaminants, holistic experts say ailments ranging from allergies to viral diseases and even troublesome behaviors can result.

"I've seen behaviors, like litterbox problems, improve when the diet improves," says Christina Chambreau, DVM, a homeopathic veterinarian and lecturer in Sparks, Md. "To have the brain be healthy, the nerves have to function well and need an abundance of healthy vitamins and minerals."
