Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT)

Rescue of the Month: From Zero
to Hero

An alley cat brings hope to hospital children and their families.

By Polina Olsen

Joey was a mistreated, intact alley cat with tattered ears and covered with ringworm. He ended up at Cat Adoption Team’s no-kill animal shelter in Sherwood, Ore., where Carol Markt volunteers each Sunday. Each week Markt visits the cats, cleans their cages and sometimes finds a cat that is just right for animal assisted
therapy (AAT).

“That’s how I met Joey,” Markt says. “He’d been living in a backyard with other cats when a neighbor brought him in.” Markt treated his ringworm and brought Joey home.

Markt is an AAT volunteer in a children’s oncology unit. Joey showed great signs of making a good AAT partner so she brought him to
the hospital.
