Cool Cats

Libby the cat acted as a guide to her disabled canine pal.

By Allie B. Kagamaster

Judges of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ annual contest chose Libby, a 10-year-old orange tabby, as 2008’s Cat of the Year recipient — for serving as an intuitive and extraordinary cat guide for a disabled canine.

Libby had become the eyes and ears for the family dog, Cashew, a senior yellow Labrador Retriever and Shar Pei mix, who’d been slowly losing her sight and hearing. Their heartwarming story was the talk of the town and appeared in Ranger Rick, National Geographic for Kids, Science World, Woman’s World and British magazine Fortean Times.
