Criminal prosecutor Nathan Winograd follows his heart to help animal shelters improve.

When future attorney Nathan J. Winograd first attended Stanford University in 1990, he says the campus was crawling with cats. So, the university went on a cat campaign. They rounded up the cats and took them to shelters. And, one by one, hundreds of animals were put to sleep.

In the United States, millions of homeless pets are euthanized each year. Winograd figured out a better solution. And he did it, he says, because he was totally unprepared for the job of running a large animal shelter.
