Kitty Paradise

A retirement home for cats promises an enjoyable experience for felines and humans alike.

By Sandy Robins

He’s been dubbed the “pawfather” of the feline enrichment movement, a title that photographer and cat lover Bob Walker rightly deserves. His latest project — building a one-of-a-kind environmentally enriched retirement home for cats in Spring Valley, Calif. — has earned him another well-deserved title: Champion for Cats.

It all started about twenty years ago when Walker and his artist wife Frances Mooney decided to transform their San Diego home into a feline adventure park with a labyrinth of ramps, hidey holes and elaborate play structures to give their lucky feline housemates places to escape and nap. Undoubtedly, cats around the world have benefited since, as Walker’s ideas have helped set the tone for much of the cat furniture and cat condos that the pet industry is producing to enrich cats’ lives today.
