What Is a Veterinary Oncologist?

If your cat is diagnosed with cancer, you might need the help of a veterinarian who specializes in oncology.

By Ruth MacPete, DVM

If your cat is diagnosed with cancer, you might need the help of a veterinary oncologist — a veterinarian who is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) in the sub-specialty of oncology (the study of cancer). A veterinary oncologist can play an important role in the management of your cat’s cancer treatment by helping you and your veterinarian find the best treatment plan for your cat. Depending on the type of cancer, an oncologist will recommend surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and/or immunotherapy to combat the malignancy. Veterinary oncologists are excellent resources and can help you find the latest drugs, experimental therapies and clinical trials. The ACVIM currently has 185 board-certified oncologists. To find an oncologist in your area, ask your veterinarian or visit ACVIM's website.
