Miracle of a Cover Cat

A desperately ill cat makes an amazing recovery.

By Cheryl Kitchell, with Bruce Kassel

Elton — our beautiful, playful Japanese Bobtail — is the joy of our lives. He was on the cover of CAT FANCY’s October 2002 issue and appeared in September 2007’s foldout poster, but those photographs were taken four years before the nightmare.

It began unexpectedly with a routine procedure. Elton had a small lesion on his lip. Our veterinarian recommended a biopsy just in case it was something serious, as well as a dental cleaning while Elton was anesthetized. Usually very simple and safe. But we learned that, when anesthesia is involved, on rare occasions it’s not so simple, whether in cats, dogs or humans.
