Pleasant Surprises

CAT FANCY

I enjoy a pleasant surprise, I think, even more than my own plans working out or dreams coming true. In the making of this issue, I received several pleasant surprises, even though some of them go back a few years.

One example is this month's Book Club. Back in 2007, I received an unexpected phone call from book project manager Karen Jones, who was representing Manhattan's first professional cat sitter, Jeanne Adlon. She asked me if I wanted to coauthor a book with Jeanne and I felt honored by the opportunity. So she introduced me to Jeanne via conference call, since I'm on the West Coast and they're on the East. Jeanne's passion for cats and fun sense of humor came through in that first phone call and that was the voice I hoped to capture in our book.

As Jeanne told me her stories of how she got into the business, about her own pets and the cats she cared for, I typed as fast as I could. She dictated to me over the phone, while I sat at Panera Bread with my cell phone headset.
