How they might help your cat's intestinal health
"Any sick animal will benefit from taking probiotics," says Linda T. Stern, DVM, M.S., (Animal Nutrition and Immunology) of Camp Hill, Pa., a big user of this supplement for the animals she treats. "Probiotics stimulate the immune system and help rebalance the normal digestive flora and support any other veterinary treatments."
The term "probiotics" describes friendly bacteria (called flora) found in the intestines that help the body digest food, promote a healthy, balanced digestive tract, and support a strong immune system — whether human, feline or another type of animal.
You're probably familiar with Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus, found in live-and-active-culture yogurts, but other beneficial intestinal flora include Bifidobacterium bifidum, as well as other strains of Bacillus, Bifidobacteria, Enterococcus and Streptococcus.
