PET MEMORIAL

Pet Funerals

How will you say goodbye to your cat?

By Jeff McAllister

The dreaded day has come. You knew it would, but you tried not to think about it. Now it’s time to say goodbye to your precious cat.

The human-pet bond is an important part of our lives. Letting go and saying goodbye are equally important. After all, your cat has been your friend and companion, and it has loved you unconditionally. Sadly, pet mortality is an inevitability we must face. Creating a lasting memorial, however, might ease the pain and transition of saying goodbye.

“The best reason for preplanning is to minimize your stress,” says Jennifer Unkle, a counselor at Resthaven Memorial Gardens Inc. in Frederick, Md. As your cat nears the end of its life, it’s unlikely you’ll want to spend your time making decisions you’re your pet’s final resting place. Preplanning what you will do when the time comes allows you to devote your final moments with your pet to mourn and say goodbye.

What is available for our pets? Pet funerals are growing in popularity among pet owners. For some, a simple burial in the backyard will suffice as long as there is no city ordinance against it. Others might choose a funeral service complete with casket, headstone, keepsakes and a final resting place. Ron Lauver, president of the National Association of Pet Funeral Directors says, “Four out of 5 pet owners choose cremation over burial.”

According to the International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Crematories (IAOPCC), there are more than 600 active pet cemeteries in the United States offering varying degrees of service. To decide what is right for you, your family and your pet, you must ask some important questions.

My sweet sweet precious 8yrs. and 11mths old died a week ago today on 6/5/2010--Monday morning. My fiancee, Niles' cat sister April and myself have been miserable. It has been unbearable the sadness of not haveing him around. He died so quickly without showing any signs until 2 days before he died at the animal emergency hospital. He was an indoor cat that died from acute renal failure. He showed signs of dehydration Saturday morning. He was hooked up to an IV that morning. Sunday morning he was coming around. He was perky, used his litter box well, and began to eat. But that evening the vet took more blood to check his creatine and BUN levels. Unfortunately the levels in increased from that morning. Early monday morning the vet said he went into complete renal failure. His kidneys had stop working all together, and he stopped producing urine. The vet had to stop his IV because all the fluid began to collect in his abdomen. We ended up having him go to sleep. I have never experienced something so sad and I still am having problems with letting him go. The vets took some tissue samples and have sent them off to find out what caused the 2 day shutdown of his kidneys. He seemed 100% 2 days earlier. Now that we've buried Niles, we are trying to find a trusting company on the internet that we can order a headstone and/or cross to place on his gravestite. I would appreciate any and all suggestions. Thank you,

Last year, in March, and then June of 2006, my two kitties passed away. I remember that on both of the days, it was cold and gloomy. My first cat Dave, who was 19, sadly passed away in March, my other cat Rip, sadly passed away in June. Its been a year, but I still grieve now, I love and miss them so much, and it is still very hard to cope with. I think that putting on a service, or burrying your kitty, as we did with ours is important, and helps also to take a little less stress off of that sad day.
