Tips for finding cat-friendly rentals

Just as you and your cat finally have come to call your apartment home, you are offered a new job in another city. Now what? Renters often are in the difficult situation of finding a place that welcomes cats. What many people might not know is that resources are available to help you find the perfect place for you and your furry companions.

Find The Right Place
Knowing why many rentals don’t allow pets in the first place will help you be a responsible renter. According to Nancy Peterson, issues specialist for The Humane Society of the United States in Washington, D.C., housing professionals have concerns about damage to drapes or blinds and carpeting. Also, if cats don’t use the litterbox properly, the smell can be difficult to remove. Managers also might be concerned about cats wandering around the property. "Be the most responsible resident you can, so you can get a sterling referral [for the next time you rent]," Peterson says.
