Two rewards totaling $1,500 are being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person who killed a cat by weighing down its carrier with rocks and throwing it in an upstate New York pond.
The nonprofit animal adoption center, Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, is offering a $500 reward, and the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is offering a $1,000 reward for information that results in the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible.
A necropsy determined that the cat had broken bones and died either from those injuries or from drowning, according to SPCA Chief Roy Gross.
If caught, the culprit or culprits would face felony animal abuse charges, which carry a 2-year jail term and/or a fine up to $5,000.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Suffolk SPCA at (631) 382-7722 or the police department at (631) 324-1026.
