Author Vicki Myron, here with Dewey, may be portrayed by Meryl Streep in the film version of her best-selling book. |
An adaptation of Vicki Myron’s best-selling book, “Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World,” may feature Meryl Streep in the role of librarian and author Myron, Variety reports.
“No contracts are signed yet,” Myron told the Spencer (Iowa) Daily Reporter. “Somebody leaked it to the press, but we’re working with New Line Cinema. They’re buying the option to make the movie, and Meryl Streep will be playing me.”
Myron’s nonfiction book is about to spend its second week at No. 1 on the New York Times Best Sellers list. The book tells how Myron found Dewey as a small kitten in an after-hours book drop outside the library in Spencer, Iowa. Myron adopted the kitten, who lived in the library and became a favorite of the town’s residents.
The project is in a first-look deal with entertainment partners Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey. Several other studios were bidding on the project. The script will be written by Pamela Gray, who wrote the upcoming film “Betty Anne Waters,” starring Hilary Swank.
