Supermarket chain Kroger on Friday asked its customers in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, east Texas, and Shreveport and Alexandria, La., to check pet food they have for specific packages of Pet Pride pet food.

The products were initially included in a Mars Petcare U.S. recall on Sept. 12. The concern is the pet food may be contaminated with Salmonella Schwarzengrund and may cause illness in cats, dogs and humans that come in contact with the food.

Kroger asked customers to return recalled products to their store for a full refund or replacement.

The specific products are Pet Pride Indoor Cat Food, 3.5-lbs. and 18-lb. packages, and Pet Pride Weight Management Dog Food, 17.6-lb. package, with a best by date of “JUL 29 09” or earlier and the No. 17 followed by five other numbers below the best by date. The 17 designates the plant that produced the food.

Kroger reported customers with questions about the recall can call 800-632-6900.
