Cats, kittens, dogs and puppies are the latest attraction at the Macy’s Union Square in San Francisco as part of the 22nd annual Holiday Windows. Every year, the department store partners with the San Francisco SPCA to help find homes for the city’s homeless animals.

“Believe” was selected as this year’s theme, and a promotional poster near the festive display reads, “We believe in second chances for these cuties.”

The animals available for adoption in the Holiday Windows are medically and behaviorally screened, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered, according to SF/SPCA officials.

The displays provide temperature control, strategically placed litterboxes and rest areas. Pets can be seen at play or in snooze mode from store opening until one hour before store closing from now through Jan. 1.

Named as one of USA Today’s “10 Great Places to Press Your Nose Against the Glass,” the pet-friendly Holiday Windows led to the adoption of 277 animals and approximately $37,000 in donations for the SF/SPCA in 2007. Volunteers are on-site to answer questions from potential adopters.

Each animal comes with a 30-day gift of pet health insurance, a free dog- or cat-advice DVD, leash and collar (for dogs) and discounts on most SF/SPCA training classes. A webcam airing live footage of the pets in the window is up on the organization’s website.
