Virus Strikes Cats at Sacramento Animal Shelter
A highly contagious virus found in multiple cats Saturday at the Sacramento Animal Care Services has prompted temporary closure of the facility’s cat adoption areas. The virus, called panleukopenia or feline distemper, has killed one cat, said Suzi Springsteen, the shelter’s senior animal care technician, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Several reported sightings of a mountain lion in Camden, Ark., probably stem from a visit by a big cat who is just passing through the area, according to an Arkansas Game and Fish Commission biologist, The Associated Press reports.

Judge: Enforce Trap Limits That Save Canada Lynx
A federal judge ordered Maine wildlife officials to take immediate steps to prevent Canada lynx from being caught in the type of trap that killed one of the threatened cats earlier this month. The ruling by U.S. District Court Judge John Woodcock was a minor victory for two animal rights’ groups that claim Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife officials are violating the Endangered Species Act by allowing trapping practices that could harm lynx, the Kennebec (Maine) Journal reports.
