Placerville Extends Time for Animal Shelter’s Temporary Site
The animal shelter in California's El Dorado County will be allowed to remain in temporary quarters on Placerville Drive at least two more years, despite concerns that it occupies potentially valuable retail space. The Placerville Planning Commission earlier this week agreed to extend the conditional-use permit for the shelter until January 2011. County Animal Services remodeled a 5,800-square-foot building in 2007 to house cats and dogs until a new animal shelter can be built southwest of the city. That project has been delayed due to design issues and may be further postponed because of county budget constraints, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Critter Collector Jailed a Second Time
A 2007 animal cruelty conviction has apparently failed to tame a Snellville, Ga., woman’s animal-hoarding impulses. Gwinnett County authorities on Tuesday impounded a dozen cats, 16 dogs, two squirrels and a raccoon that were running amok at the home of Sylvia Simmons, 59. Simmons was jailed for the second time in two years. This time, she faces 12 counts of animal neglect and a probation violation charge, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
