When Autumn the cat went missing from her home in Chesterfield County on the outskirts of Richmond, Va., her owners feared the worst. Ann Crews and her husband, Wayne, searched everywhere for their 2-year-old calico, but they had a feeling something wasn’t right.

That’s because on Feb. 14, after a new mattress and box spring were delivered to their home, they realized they were short by one cat: Autumn wasn’t in the house. Knowing that their three cats had ripped a hole under the old box spring that got carried out, Ann said she started to think that Autumn had gone with the delivery crew.

“I was afraid … I had a bad feeling she was up in that box spring,” Ann said. She immediately called the furniture company to ask them to look for Autumn in their truck, and also offered to go to the company’s distribution center to look for Autumn herself.

She was told that her cat wasn’t around. Meanwhile, her old box spring sat in the warehouse for a week before it was to be dumped at a landfill.

On Feb. 20, Wilbert Davis, the delivery man responsible for disposing of the used mattress, stopped himself when he felt something odd. He took a moment to take the cellophane off the mattress and that’s when he saw a cat’s eyes shining in the dark.

Ann said her cat was found mashed between the mattress and box spring, her front paws straight above her head and still wearing her purple rhinestone collar. “Her little claws were all tore up from where she had tried to dig out,” she said.

Realizing that the company had accidentally walked away with a family pet, Davis took the cat back to the warehouse where he fed her and gave her water.

Because Ann had called the company to inquire about her missing cat, it wasn’t hard to find out who the owners were. Autumn was returned to her family, dehydrated but otherwise in good health.

After a visit to the veterinarian, Autumn checked out OK. Ann said the cats are all back to being themselves again, playing and eating.
Autumn also has been enjoying the extra attention she has been getting from local newspaper and TV reporters for her story of survival, Ann said.

“We are so excited to have Autumn back home,” she said. “We spent a week crying and praying. It's nice that it all came to a happy ending.”

Mine have found the same place when they are scared or just when anyone comes to the door. Becomes a problem when I need to get ahold of them for things such as a ride to the vets.
