The rescue of an abused cat named Emma has inspired an adoption event to be held Sunday, Dec. 20, in New York City.
Emma, a 10-month-old female cat, was discovered Dec. 9 by the city’s Animal Care and Control (ACC) in the Washington Heights neighborhood after she was terribly injured. Her lower jaw and nasal passages were shattered and her right eye was out of socket. Based on the majority of trauma to the head, veterinarians determined that Emma's injuries were caused by human force; either she was beaten with a baseball bat or kicked several times in the face.
Anjellicle Cats Rescue (ACR) — a nonprofit no-kill, volunteer organization — works closely with ACC, so representatives learned almost immediately about Emma’s situation and worked to save her life. She is recovering from surgery at Gotham Veterinary Center while ACR seeks donations for her care.
The adoption event in Emma’s honor will take place 1-6 p.m. Dec. 20 at 59th Street in Columbus Circle.
Cats up for adoption include:
- Moe, a 2-year-old male orange tabby that was a victim of an eviction and ended up in the city's kill shelter
- Austin, a one-eyed 5-month-old kitten
- Princess, a 1-year-old white female with gray streaks that was surrendered by her owner and almost euthanized for space issues.
The event will include a holiday bazaar with all proceeds going directly to ACR to care for Emma and all the ACR homeless and abused cats and kittens.
