Can't Have a Pet? Foster Care May Fit Your Needs
Helen Forte lives in Weston with her husband and their two teenage daughters. Their home is complete, except for one thing: They can't have pets. "We travel often, and it's not fair for the pet to be left by itself or to be moving around," said Forte, 45. A little more than a year ago, Forte's family became "foster parents" for the Humane Society of Broward County, reports the Palm Beach Post.

Besides the usual wild and wacky stories, a lot of pet news this year was surprisingly dark, from the animal-cruelty charges at the Toronto Humane Society to the horrific fate of a woman attacked by a supposedly "tame" chimpanzee.
