Paws for Poetry Contest

Kids can celebrate National Poetry Month by writing about their favorite pet friend.

Posted: March 12, 2010, 3 a.m. EST

April marks the 14th annual National Poetry Month, and to encourage children to appreciate the art form, kids are invited to submit a poem about their favorite furry, feathered or scaly friend to the Paws for Poetry Contest.

The contest is co-sponsored by the kids’ virtual field trip website Meet Me At The Corner and Flashlight Press.

Original poems of any length may be submitted in one of two categories: Group One (ages 5-9) and Group Two (ages 10-12). The poem may be any length or style and must be submitted with a photo of the pet who is the subject of the poem. One grand prize winner in each category will receive a $50 gift card from Amazon.com. Two runners-up in each category will receive a $25 gift card from Amazon. Children’s author Thad Krasnesky, author of the upcoming “That Cat Can’t Stay,” will be the contest judge. He will also provide winners with signed copies of his new book.

In addition to the prize packages, winning poems and pet photos will be highlighted in an upcoming Meet Me at the Corner video podcast, which will be videotaped at New York’s Angellicle Cat Rescue Center. Local students will present the winning poems.

All submissions should be mailed to Paws for Poetry Contest, c/o Meet Me at the Corner, 20 West Del Norte, Colorado Springs, Co., 80907. The contest deadline is April 15.
