Could this Chinese Year of the Tiger be the last one with actual tigers still afoot in the world’s wild? The numbers are not encouraging. Experts believe the global wild tiger population has fallen to below 3,000 — less than 3 percent of what it was just 100 years ago, reports The New York Times.

Cats Left Outside Former Shelter
The staff at the pet grooming company that houses the former Northeast Animal Shelter on Highland Avenue arrived to work yesterday to some surprising packages. Staff there reported to police that two large cardboard boxes full of cats and kittens were left outside, reports The Salem (Mass.) News.

Man Who Killed Kitten Sentenced for Attacking Two Women
A La Crosse man who attacked two women and killed a pet kitten escaped a prison sentence Tuesday. Phillip Atkinson, 22, will spend about 115 days in the La Crosse County Jail when good time credit and days already in custody are subtracted from his sentence. He also will serve four years of probation, reports the LaCrosse (Wisc.) Tribune.
