The Minnesota Spay Neuter Assistance Program (MNSNAP) recently reported that it is offering low-cost spay and neutering services on its new 33-foot mobile surgical unit to low-income individuals, shelters and rescue organizations. The move is in an effort to combat animal overpopulation — about 80,000 to 90,000 pets are euthanized in Minnesota every year, according to the nonprofit organization.
MNSNAP, which is funding the project, has contracted Blue Sky Veterinary Services LLC to oversee and provide all veterinary services on the mobile unit.
The mobile unit is expected to reach neighborhoods where cost, transportation or the absence of veterinary services is an obstacle to obtaining spay and neuter services.
Kim Culbertson, DVM, founder of MNSNAP, said that they have received a lot of support, but they still need financial help.
“While the outpouring of support from the community has been overwhelming, we are in need of financial donations and in-kind gifts,” Culbertson said. “We are also looking for locations that would be willing to host our mobile clinic for a day. Ideal sites would be churches, community centers, businesses or other safe, accessible, public spaces that could accommodate parking for our mobile unit and our clients.”
MNSNAP hopes to provide a minimum of 7,000 surgeries annually with a goal of 12,000 surgeries as soon as an additional veterinarian can be added.
