HALO Animal Rescue is reducing adoption fees on Saturday, July 24, 2010 in honor of its "Sweet 16" Birthday Party. Cat and kitten adoption fees will be just $16 and dogs' and puppies' adoption fees will be reduced by 25% during this celebration. Pets are available for adoption at HALO's adoption shelter at 5231 N 35th Avenue in Phoenix and also at nine PetSmart Adoption Centers around the Valley, beginning at 11 a.m.

At HALO's shelter on 35th Avenue, people can also bring in their own pets to be microchipped for just $10 and enjoy birthday cake.

"The community has been so supportive of us through the last 16 years, so we wanted to give something back," said Heather Allen, HALO's co-founder, president and CEO. "Also, we are hoping to clear out the shelter so we can make space for more animals that need to find new homes."

This is the second year that HALO has offered such deep discounts on dog and cat adoptions in honor of its birthday and they are hoping to adopt out 150 dogs and cats.

"You should have seen it last year. It was non-stop all day long, getting these guys adopted," said Kim Zikmanis, shelter manager. "At the end of the day, it was so quiet — nearly every pet went home. We all just stood and looked at each other in this empty shelter. Then we said 'OK, let's go save some more tomorrow morning.'"

The majority of animals that HALO takes in are on the "euthanasia lists" at Maricopa County Animal Care and Control and the Arizona Humane Society, the two large open-admission shelters in Phoenix.

"There are just far too many animals being turned in to shelters in Maricopa County," said Allen. "Our focus is, and has always been, to help the animals in most need - and those in the most need are the ones scheduled for euthanasia. The animals we take in were literally on death row."

Great news, everyone! HALO found new homes for more than 80 dogs and cats during our Sweet 16 Birthday Celebration. We also microchipped 75 pets whose owners brought them in especially to be microchipped. It was a fantastic day! Thank you all for your support! From, your friends at HALO
