Dr. Lyons' award is matched with a scholarship for future feline researchers.

The Winn Feline Foundation recently named Leslie Lyons, Ph.D., the winner of the 2010 Winn Excellence in Feline Research Award. She was presented the award in early August during the President’s Installation Lunch at the American Veterinary Medical Association’s annual convention in Atlanta.

Dr. Lyons received $2,500 and a crystal cat, the “Winnie.”

Lyons’ career includes work in comparative genetics, including developing a feline genetic mapping pedigree. Most recently, her work has included the analysis of the origin of cat breeds and the sites of cat domestication. This endeavor resulted in a documentary with National Geographic as an episode of “Explorer” entitled “The Science of Cats.”

The American Veterinary Medical Foundation pairs the award with a matching $2,500 scholarship for a veterinary student interested in feline medicine. The recipient this year was Adam Breiteneicher, a third-year student at Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Both awards are designed to promote and encourage feline health studies by established veterinary research scientists as well as those entering this field of study, according to the Winn Feline Foundation.

I admire very much the valuable work done by Leslie Lyons without which I would not be able to comment accurately on Turkish cat breeds. However her conclusions and statements on these breeds should in my opinion reflect more closely the genetic data. For further details please refer to this National Geographic interview and particularly the comments as follows. LINK
